Implementing such strategies is generally called money laundering. After money has been laundered, it can be used for legitimate purposes. Law enforcement agencies of many jurisdictions have set up sophisticated systems in an effort to detect suspicious transactions or activities, and many have set up international cooperative arrangements to assist each other in these endeavors. In a number of legal and regulatory systems, the term «money laundering» has become conflated with other forms of financial and business crimeand is sometimes used more generally to include misuse of the financial system involving things such as securities, digital currenciescredit cards, and traditional currencyincluding terrorism financing and evasion of international sanctions.

Some countries treat obfuscation of sources of money as also constituting money laundering, whether it is intentional or by merely using financial systems or services that do not identify or track sources or destinations. Once the software has mined data and flagged suspect transactions, it alerts bank management, who must then determine whether to file a report with the government.

The financial services industry has become more vocal about the rising costs of anti-money laundering regulation and the limited benefits that they claim it brings. To comply with FATF regulations, member states and their financial institutions should implement Know Your Customer KYC ID verification measures, perform FATF recommended due diligence measures, maintain suitable records of high-risk clients, regularly monitor accounts for suspicious financial activity and report that activity to the appropriate national authority, enforce effective sanctions against legal persons and obliged entities that fail to comply with FATF regulations.

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime maintains the International Money Laundering Information Networka website that provides information and software for anti-money laundering data collection and analysis.

Many jurisdictions adopt a list of specific predicate crimes for money laundering prosecutions, while others criminalize the proceeds of any serious crimes.
